How to set up subcollections

Show "shop within this collection" links on your collection pages — like Men > Shirts, Pants, Accessories — using one menu.

Shopify doesn't have real nested collections, so Homage builds subcollection navigation from a menu. You create one menu that mirrors how your collections relate to each other, and the Collection banner section uses it to show the right links on every collection page automatically.

1. Create the menu

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Navigation and create a new menu (call it something like "Subcollections").
  2. Add your top-level collections as menu items, and nest their subcollections underneath. For example:
Men collection: Men Shirts collection: Men's Shirts Pants collection: Men's PantsWomen collection: Women Shirts collection: Women's Shirts Dresses collection: Women's Dresses

Every item must link to a collection — other link types are skipped. Up to three levels deep works.

2. Connect it to the banner

  1. In the theme editor, open a collection template and select the Collection banner section.
  2. Turn on Show subcollections and pick your menu under Menu.

That's it. The banner finds the collection being viewed in your menu and shows the relevant links: on a parent collection (Men), visitors see its subcollections; on a subcollection (Men's Shirts), they see its sibling collections, with the current one highlighted. Each link also shows the collection's product count.

3. Style it

  • StyleText links, Button chips, or Image and text tiles.
  • Placement — on the banner image or below it.

When Style is Image and text, Image source picks the tile image:

  • Collection — each collection's featured image from the admin.
  • First product — the featured image of the first product in that collection.
  • Metafield — a custom image per collection, set up via metafields. Enter just the key in Metafield key (e.g. nav_image). See How to set up metafields.

Image shape — square, round, or circle.

📝 Note: Tiles only appear for collections that have a featured image set in the admin, regardless of which image source you pick.

💡 Tip: This menu is only used for subcollection navigation — it doesn't have to match your main menu. You can keep your header menu short and let subcollections handle deep browsing.
