Understanding navigation

Setting up navigation is a key first step when launching your online store. Clear and well-organized menus help your customers quickly find products, collections, and other important store information. Thoughtful navigation ensures a seamless shopping experience, guiding visitors to what they need most.

💡 Tip: Adding and organizing menus is a simple way to highlight what matters most in your store. This makes it much easier for shoppers to discover your products and pages.

You can add, remove, or edit menus and links directly from the Navigation page in your admin. Use your theme settings to control where each menu appears as part of your store’s design. Before making changes, explore your default menu options and preview how navigation looks in different themes.

Default menus

Your store has two default menus visible on every page: the main menu and the footer menu. These menus help customers explore and navigate your store.

Main menu

The main menu usually displays in your store’s header and serves as the main navigation tool for your customers.

  1. By default, the main menu includes:

    • Home — links to your store’s homepage

    • Catalog — displays all available products

  2. Drop-down menus can be added to group related links, such as collections or policy pages.

    1. Drop-downs are especially valuable for stores with a wide product range, helping shoppers find products more quickly.

Footer menu

The footer menu appears along the bottom of your store. This is an ideal spot for links to store policies, contact pages, or customer support information.

Other menus

Many modern themes, including ours, allow you to add extra menus in places like the header or additional theme sections.

  1. If you need more flexible navigation, check your theme's settings for menu placement options.

  2. Advanced users can further expand navigation by customizing theme code or working with a theme expert.

Comparing navigation in different themes

Each theme offers unique navigation styles and layouts. You can see how navigation works and feels by previewing theme demos.

  1. To compare navigation, visit the theme store and use the "View Demo" feature on various themes.

Our themes are crafted to fully support these navigation features, ensuring a smooth and modern browsing experience for your customers.

Add, remove, or edit menu items

Menu items form the foundation of your store’s navigation. They can link to products, collections, custom pages, blog posts, store policies, external websites, or even email addresses. You can manage your menus any time from the Navigation page in your admin.

📝 Note: Before adding something to a menu (like a collection or a page), make sure to create that item in your store.

Add a menu item

Menu items can connect to many different pages or destinations:

  1. Webpages

  2. Collections

  3. Products

  4. Blogs or individual blog posts

  5. Store policies

  6. External websites

  7. Email addresses (for example, mailto:youremail@example.com)

Steps

  1. In your admin, go to Online Store > Navigation.

  2. Click the menu title you want to update.

  3. Click Add menu item.

  4. Enter a name for your menu item — this appears to your shoppers, and special characters or emojis are supported.

  5. Click the Link field and either type a web address or select from these link types:

    1. Home — your store’s homepage

    2. Collections — a specific collection or all collections

    3. Products — a specific product or all products

    4. Pages — a custom page on your store

    5. Blogs — a blog on your store

    6. Blog posts — a specific blog post

    7. Policies — one of your store's policy pages

    8. Email link (format: mailto:youremail@example.com)

  6. If selecting a collection, you can filter by tag to display only certain products.

  7. Choose the destination, or use the default if selecting Home.

  8. Click Add to save your menu item.

  9. Click Save menu to update your menu.

⚠️ Important: If you delete a resource—such as a product, collection, or page—referenced in your navigation, any menu items linked to it will be removed automatically.

Steps

  1. In your admin, go to Online Store > Navigation.

  2. Click Delete next to the menu item you want to remove.

  3. Click Remove to confirm.

  4. Click Save menu.
